The agents had seen a  hard disk  containing sexual images of Cherry which Gareth was sending to predators in exchange for their personal information, and Cherry tells Gareth that she herself gave this to the agents because she knew the resulting investigation would lead them to bring Gareth and Cherry into their team, which she thought was a good idea. For food, people rely on seeds traded by the citadels. However, these are coded to produce only one harvest. The people outside of the citadel must find food and resources on their own. The citadel gives them modified seeds that require a special process to be made fertile. Only the scientists of the citadels know the details of this process. Joseph has made plans for the two to lay low at a remote farmhouse which apparently contains a closet with the ability to transport occupants into an alternative timeline if they follow instructions in a notebook. At the farmhouse, with the police closing in, Joseph and Sidney locate the closet and follow the instructions. The process works, and the two leave the closet to find themselves in another timeline but find a nearby church and flour mill mysteriously locked. The notebook instructs them to wait fourteen days before re-entering the closet to return to the present. Sidney reluctantly waits, expressing her desire to return to the present to reunite with her young daughter, Steph. John Ellman, recently released after being jailed by Shaw for ten years after striking a man that led to his death, is asked to take watch of Shaw for supposed infidelity. Shaw is shot and killed in his car with Ellman found at the scene of the crime (having heard the crash) and assumed to be the murderer; Nancy and Jimmy, a young couple working for Dr. Evan Beaumont, had seen the dead body being moved into a car, but are told by a mysterious man to keep quiet. Ellman is framed for the murder.
